Other addictive substances during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Many addictive substances are far more dangerous for your baby than they are for you. They are harmful to your child’s development and health. These include, for example:

  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Ecstasy
  • Opioids
  • Certain sleeping pills and sedatives
  • Ritalin
  • Ketamine

These addictive substances have varying effects and can lead to addiction. Addiction means that it can be difficult to stop using – even if you are pregnant.

Under no circumstances should certain addictive substances be stopped suddenly and without medical supervision.

This could be dangerous for you and your baby.

If you have any questions, are struggling with addiction, or are currently undergoing substitution treatment, seek support and advice! Please contact:

  • An addiction counselling centre from the Vienna Addiction and Drug Support Network
  • Your doctor
  • Your midwife or obstetrician
  • Other experts you trust

The sooner these people are informed, the sooner you and your baby will receive the right support. Talk about it, even if you aren’t asked directly.
